Transcription de Einar
: Interviewer: ["Why do you write songs?"] Nick Cave: "I think it's just survival. I don't mean... I mean survival in the sense that when I don't work, when I don't go to the office every day, which I do, I... You know, I get up early and I go to the office, you know, and I stay there all day and I play the piano and I write stuff. When I don't do that I find it [life] kind of unbearable. I don't know even how to explain that... I just find it... To me, it makes me feel elevated, in some way, to do it [write music]. And when I don't, I feel really kind of flat." Interviewer: ["How did you write the songs for the new album?"] Nick Cave: "I guess, when I was writing the songs, I didn't spend as much time on perfecting them, as I did perhaps on the last record. On No More Shall We Part I spent a real lot of time on those lyrics. Working them out, and moving them around, and editing them, and rewriting them and all of that sort of stuff. And this record, I wanted to do it quicker and rawer. So that, I guess the lyrics in a way are kind of like first drafts. It's rawer and from the heart, you know." Interviewer: ["Blixa Bargeld said in a recent interview that the recording of Nocturama was not democratic, because 'democracy is slow'."] Nick Cave: "I can't agree more. Democracy is slow, yeah. We've been together for long enough for us to understand our areas of expertise. And when we mix a record, for example, Mick Harvey tends to step forward and take control. But I'm the boss, you know." Interviewer: "Do you always have the last word?" Nick Cave: "Not necessarily, but I'm the boss." Interviewer: "Do you still read the Bible?" Nick Cave: "I do, yeah. Yeah... Do you?" Interviewer: "No." Nick Cave: "You should, it's just a great book." Nick Cave: "I read the Bible a lot, because I found it really exciting. Not so much because of any belief really, I just thought, initially certainly, I just thought it was some of the most extraordinary writing I'd ever read. And I loved the stories and so forth, of the Old Testament especially. And they really reminded me of my youth. When I was really kind of, you know, I went to church a lot as a boy. And here are these kind of thunderous tales and all that sort of stuff. And I just really enjoyed reading them for that reason, you know." Interviewer: "Do you still use drugs?" Nick Cave: "No... No, I don't." Interviewer: "Is it something that..." Nick Cave: "To be honest, I don't think it makes so much difference. I haven't found that it made that much difference at all. You know, it took twenty years or so, of being, you know, being continually under the influence of drugs for twenty years. And I still managed to get up in the morning, I still managed to sit at the piano and write the songs, and sometimes I'd spend three days sitting there, kind of, you know, whatever... But things... You know, then I stopped taking them. Largely because they stopped working, and, you know, they just didn't have any effect anymore, and they just made me feel really sick. And, I don't know, I still get up in the morning. I still do my job, you know." |
